Osteoporosis Drugs

Some side effects and risks of these drugs

Oral bisphosphonates

Esophageal irritation/ulcers, rare ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaw) with invasive dental procedures, rare atypical femur fractures with long-term use

IV Reclast

Flu-like symptoms with first infusion

SC Prolia

Low calcium levels, rare immune suppression and severe infections, rare ONJ with invasive dental procedures, rare atypical femur fractures with long-term use

Tymlos/Forteo

Rare high calcium and kidney stones, dizziness.

In patients who have received radiation, avoid the use of these type of drugs.

Evenity

Increased risks of MACE events.  (MACE - Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) include heart attack; stroke, hospitalization because of heart failure; and revascularization after percutaneous coronary intervention, and coronary artery bypass graft.
